For me, it all started with Tony Blair. I remember him using this tactic. I’m sure it goes back a lot further than this. I’m not a political commentator and nor do I profess to be. These are observations. I did a similar Brexit one and later a Covid 19 one. You could find these out there to stream in all the usual places. I lifted the lyric pattern and the tune from Desolation Row by Bob Dylan. The Results of the Enquiry is, however, completely original.

After Tony Blair, talk of waiting for investigations to be completed before accepting any blame or even mention of illegal wars, went quiet for a while. Then of course came Boris Johnson and then a seemingly endless stream of shamed politicians all grasping on to the “Let’s wait for the results of the enquiry before any comment is made.

The song writes itself of course, once I got the idea. Like many it’s ideas within an idea.

Sir Geoffrey is fictional of course and there are no direct references to anyone in the song. I did take a few sound clips which were relevant at the time, but time moves on quickly in politics, hence why the characters are fictional.

Results of the Enquiry

Verse 1

Sir Geoffrey has denied any impropriety and wrongdoing, in what must only be described as the strongest possible terms;

I fully intend to answer your question but may I begin by saying, under the previous administration, things were worse.

Chorus

So let’s wait for the results of the enquiry, to the investigations of the allegations made,

Until then I don’t have any further comment

The verdict and the execution stayed

It’s like hide and seek and playing in the playground

These are strategies that haven’t failed me yet

I’m hoping that your viewers, voters, readers.. can forget

Verse 2

Let me be robust and use my thumbs to point and I’ll hope the public trust won’t erode

Let me be clear my honourable friend was unaware of any.. contravention of the code..

Chorus

Verse 3

Legitimate business dealings can only seek to strengthen, and enhance my duties in the house

Rhetoric and classics are my paths to higher studies, economics I’m not so keen I’ll leave that to my pals

Chorus

Chorus

Can we just say that before any comment is made about this page, there is to be a full and thorough investigation. To make any comment at this stage would be to undermine the integrity of this investigation. My colleagues and I strenuously deny any impropriety. We acted with complete propriety and deny any wrongdoing of any nature.
